Caption:
This photomicrograph depicts a methenamine silver stained lung tissue specimen, which reveals histopathologic changes associated with a case of histoplasmosis, caused by the fungal pathogen Histoplasma capsulatum. Note the many yeast-form H. capsulatum organisms. This organism, which grows in soil, or material contaminated with bat or bird droppings, becomes airborne when the contaminated soil is disturbed, and breathing in the spores causes an infection.
