This historic image from 1956, was captured during the presentation of what had been the first U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) Kimble Award, which was presented to William Howell Ewing, on the left, and Dr. Phil R. Edwards, both working at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Enteric Section. The Kimble Award consists of a $1,000 prize, and a silver plaque, which pays “recognition to the application of scientific knowledge to the public health laboratory”.
