Caption:
These slant cultures were growing Actinomyces viscosus bacterial colonies, and revealed the oxygen requirements of this bacterium. Tube #1 provided an aerobic atmosphere, Tube #2 provided an aerobic atmosphere with added carbon dioxide (CO2), and Tube #3 provided an anaerobic atmosphere with added CO2. These environmental ingredients lead to colonial growth patterns indicative of the oxygen requirements needed by A. viscosus to thrive. See PHIL 3002 for another view of this experiment, which also added a fourth tube consisting of an anaerobic atmosphere with no CO2.
