This photograph depicted two sets of organs harvested from two cotton rats, Sigmodon hispidus, that had been infected by the fox tapeworm, Echinococcus multilocularis. The smaller lungs were situated above the livers. The infection produced numerous multi-chambered, or multilocular, thin-walled, alveolar-type hydatid cysts. E. multilocularis causes the disease alveolar echinococcosis . The lungs and liver on the left, had been infected 20-days before, while the organs on the right, had been infected 45-days prior to the creation of this image.
