This photomicrograph revealed the presence of the bacterium, Fusobacterium nucleatum, after having been cultured in a thioglycollate medium, and incubated for a for 48 hour time period. F. nucleatum is an anaerobic, Gram-negative bacterium that is a normal inhabitant of the oral cavity, and plays a role in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease.
