This photomicrograph revealed the presence of the bacterium, Fusobacterium necrogenes, which had been cultured in a thioglycollate medium, for a 48 hour incubation period. Like the genus Bacteroides, Fusobacterium are anaerobic, Gram-negative bacteria that are normal inhabitants of the intestine. Fusobacterium spp. are associated with pleuropulmonary, and oral infections.
