Caption:
This photomicrograph revealed the presence of the bacterium, Bacteroides trichoides, after having been cultured in a thioglycollate medium, for a 48 hour incubation period. Bacteroides spp. occupy a major percentage of the normal population of bacterial flora in humans, mainly in the intestinal tract. They have no endotoxin in their cell membrane, so infection by Bacteroides only occurs after severe trauma to the abdominal region.
