Caption:
This photomicrograph of an unidentified tissue sample, revealed some of the ultrastructural morphology exhibited by the fungal organism, Exserohilum rostratum, in a case of phaeohyphomycosis. One of a group of fungal infections characterized by superficial and deep tissue involvement, phaeohyphomycosis is caused by dematiaceous, or dark-walled fungi that form pigmented hyphae, and yeast-like cells in the infected tissues.
