Caption:
Captured during the necropsy of a Sigmodon sp. cotton rat. An incision had been made on the specimen, exposing the interior visceral contents of the thoracic and abdominal cavities. Note how the liver had been infected by the fox tapeworm, Echinococcus multilocularis, larvae, or oncospheres, and produced numerous early hydatid cysts. The spleen also showed early evidence of being encysted as well. E. multilocularis causes the disease alveolar echinococcosis.
