Caption:
Captured during the necropsies of two Sigmodon sp. cotton rats. An incision had been made on each specimen, exposing the interior visceral contents of the thoracic and abdominal cavities. Note how the liver of either rat had been infected by the fox tapeworm, Echinococcus multilocularis, larvae, or oncospheres, and produced numerous multi-chambered, or multilocular”, thin-walled alveolar-type hydatid cysts. E. multilocularis causes the disease alveolar echinococcosis.
