This photograph depicts a close frontal view of what is referred to as a CDC Lombard-Dowell (LD) Presumpto Plate II quadrant plate, and focused on quadrant 2 that had contained the LD agar supplemented with deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), and the indicator toluidine blue, used to detect hydrolysis of the DNA. This quadrant was inoculated with an unidentified anaerobic bacterium. This test revealed a weak positive result, seen as a hazy lavender color in the region of the bacterial growth, where DNA hydrolysis had occurred. This means that the added organism was able to produce the enzyme deoxyribonuclease (DNase), that facilitated the DNA hydrolysis.
