This photograph depicts a close frontal view of a Petri dish culture plate that had contained a blood agar medium, which had been inoculated with two unidentified anaerobic bacteria. This scenario was created to test whether these bacterial organisms could produce the enzyme nitrate reductase, which results in the reduction of nitrate (NO3) to nitrite (2). A small white paper disk, impregnated with potassium nitrate, was laid atop the agar surface over the respective bacterial films. The results of this test showed that the bacteria above produced a positive nitrogen reduction result, turning their respective disk red, while the bacteria below, produced a negative result, producing no change atop or around the white nitrate disk.
