Caption:
This photograph depicts a close frontal view of a Petri dish culture plate that had contained a blood agar medium, which had been inoculated with an unidentified anaerobic bacterium. This scenario was created to test whether the bacterial organism could produce the enzyme nitrate reductase, which results in the reduction of nitrate (NO3) to nitrite (2). A small white paper disk, impregnated with potassium nitrate, was laid atop the agar surface. The results of this test proved to be negative, producing no change atop or around the white nitrate disk, even after the addition of zinc dust.
