Under a magnification of 600X, this photomicrograph of a PAS-stained crested cockatoo, Cacatua galerita, lung tissue sample, designated tissue sample #320, highlighted some of the histopathologic findings in a case of pulmonary aspergillosis. The bird had been infected with the fungal organism, Aspergillus fumigatus. Note the network of numerous, darkly stained, filamentous mycelia, as well as a number of fan-shaped conidial heads.
