This photograph depicted a left lateral view of a young man’s head and upper body, and highlighted the severe right paranasal swelling, diagnosed as a case of ghondou, a tertiary, or third stage form of yaws, caused by the bacterium, Treponema pallidum pertenue. Yaws is also referred to as framboesia tropica.
