This photograph depicts a patient who had presented to a clinical setting, with this skin lesion on the left arm, due to the bacterium, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, a Gram-negative diplococcus, which is the causative agent for gonorrhea. Though these bacteria can infect the genital tract, the mouth, and the rectum, they can become disseminated throughout a person’s body, by way of the bloodstream.
