This historic July 23, 1940 image depicted female fur seals, Callorhinus ursinus, that were in their Storaya Artil Rookery, on St. George Island, in the Alaskan, Pribilof Island group. The image highlighted the cutaneous signs of a fungal infection, known as ringworm, in some of the Rookery’s members.
