This photograph depicted a reverse view of two Petri dish culture plates that had contained a growth medium of Sabouraud dextrose agar. The plate on the left was inoculated with the fungal organism, Trichophyton ajelloi, formerly known as Keratinomyces ajelloi, and the right plate was inoculated with the fungal organism, Microsporum vanbreuseghemii. The T. ajelloi plate grew a colony that displayed an irregular periphery, and a very dark central region. The M. vanbreuseghemii organisms produced a radiating, uniform periphery, and a central region that appeared slightly elevated, producing a small cavitation in the center. The M. vanbreuseghemii isolate was harvested from an infected Malabar giant squirrel, Ratufa indica.
