This photomicrograph of a sonified tissue sample, revealed the presence of Pneumocystis jirovecii, formerly known as Pneumocystis carinii, fungal organisms. P. jirovecii is the causal agent of a severe pneumonitis, resulting from the proliferation of this fungus in the lungs of immunocompromised individuals, and is a major cause of death in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients.
