This vaccinator working in Bihar, India was vaccinated at least 14 times for smallpox, but still contracted the virus in 1974. Historically, the vaccine has been effective in preventing smallpox infection in 95% of those vaccinated. Smallpox vaccination provides high level immunity for 3 to 5 years. Thereafter, immunity level decreases.
