Caption:
This was a photomicrograph of a Gridley-stained tissue sample harvested from a horse’s leg, from a site of infection, which highlighted some of the histopathology caused by the fungal pathogen, Pythium insidiosum, formerly referred to as Hypomyces destruens. The infection was diagnosed as phycomycosis, a form or mucormycosis. You can see the septate P. insidiosum mycelia throughout the specimen. See PHIL 27413, for a view of the tissue mass from which this sample had been derived.
