This transmission electron microscopic (TEM) image of a thin section tissue sample, reveals the presence of the Ebola virus. The TEM was captured during an outbreak in 1976, when a total of 340 deaths occurred in Zaire, and southern Sudan. Since 1997, Zaire is known as the Democratic Republic of Congo.
