This image depicts an anterior view of woman’s face, revealing early pathologic changes evidenced in the patient’s skin lesions, due to what was determined to be a case of Hansen’s disease, otherwise known as leprosy, which was caused by the Gram-positive bacterium, Mycobacterium leprae. Findings included wrinkling of the face, especially the midface, involving skin of the nose and cheeks, and around the eyes, nodular scarification of the forehead and chin, and a flattening of the nose bridge, known as a saddle nose deformity.
