This is a photograph depicting 4-larvae of the Culex quinquefasciatus mosquito, also known as the southern house mosquito. These 4-larvae represent the four stages of larval development. Larvae shed their skin several times, a process known as molting, during these stages, also referred to as instars. Larvae develop into pupae in as few as 5-days.
