This image depicted a close frontal view of a Petri dish culture plate, which had contained Lowenstein-Jensen growth medium that had been inoculated with the bacterium, Mycobacterium phlei, and after an unknown incubation period, had given rise to this orange-colored colony. Note the knobby surface texture, which as this colony grew, would develop into ridges that will tend to converge, and rise towards the colony’s center (see PHIL 25500). This colony were illuminated by epi-illumination.
