Caption:
This image depicts a very close dorsoventral view of a scarlet snake, Cemophora coccinea. A harmless tricolored snake, the scarlet snake, can be confused with the venomous coral snake, Micrurus fulvius. However, when analyzing the coloration of C. coccinea, you will note that the red colored bands do not touch the white-yellow bands, and its head is red tipped, and not black. See PHIL 25004 and 25005, for other views of this reptile.
