This photograph documented the first environmental samples delivered to the National Laboratory, as part of the initiation of a Guatemala polio environmental surveillance program, in November 2018. Subject matter experts from the Polio and Picornavirus Laboratory Branch, in the Division of Viral Diseases, along with Global Polio Laboratory Network members, and in-country stakeholders, provided training and guidance to the program. This image depicted the culmination of a huge effort, where the team experienced the delivery of the historic samples. Polio environmental surveillance provides a complement to acute flaccid paralysis surveillance, and became an important component of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) 2013 - 2018 Polio Eradication, and Endgame Strategic Plan.
