Caption:
This image depicted a frontal view of two Petri dishes, each containing xanthine growth medium. The plate on the left had been inoculated with the bacterium, Nocardia asteroides, while the plate on the right had been inoculated with the bacterium Nocardia otitidiscaviarum, formerly referred to as N. caviae. Cultivated on xanthine medium, the unique abilities of N. otitidiscaviarum amongst other species of the genus Nocardia, to hydrolyze xanthine, left a halo around the small colony, indicating a region where xanthine hydrolysis had taken place. Note the absence of a halo surrounding the N. asteroides colony on the left, indicating that no hydrolysis of xanthine was present.
