Under a magnification of 400X, this photomicrograph of a Gridley-stained tissue sample, harvested from a hamster with a case of African histoplasmosis, revealed some of the ultrastructural morphology exhibited by the responsible fungal pathogen, Histoplasma capsulatum var. duboisii. Note that during this yeast phase of H. capsulatum var. duboisii, you are able to see that some of the cells were undergoing the reproductive process known as budding.
