Caption:
This photomicrograph of a tissue sample revealed some of the morphologic characteristics exhibited by the fungal organism, Neotestudina rosatii, in a case of white grain mycetoma. This condition was an example of a holotypic specimen, harvested at a point when the initial description of N. rosatii had first been classified. Note the large, pale granule in this section, exhibiting what has been described, as a cement-like matrix. Classically, as was the case here, the granule was surrounded by a collection of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs), a class of white blood cells (WBCs).
