This image depicts a view of a patients open mouth, highlighting the lower lip, on which you can see mucous patches that were due to a secondary syphilis infection, caused by the bacterium, Treponema pallidum. These mucous patches form during the breakdown of mucous membranes. These patches can also develop inside the mouth, vulva, and vagina.
