This multi-image collage highlighted various examples of colonial morphology exhibited by nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), i.e., mycobacteria other than Mycobacterium tuberculosis. (1) depicts a smooth-S type colony, where “S” refers to the organisms scotochromogenic nature, able to develop pigment in the dark. (2) depicts a smooth-D and -S type colony, whereupon “D” means that the colony exhibits a dome-shaped morphology. (3) depicts a smooth-T type colony, whereupon “T” means that the colony exhibited a transparent and irregularly shaped morphology. (4) says that these morphologic variations are exhibited by Mycobacterium bacteria that are members of Group II, the scotochromogens, and Group III, the nonchromogens.
