Caption:
This image depicted a close view of the back of a 2 ½-year-old patient, who had been diagnosed with a case of Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), also referred to as Letterer–Siwe disease, and histiocytosis X. The condition involves the overabundance of immature Langerhans cells, a form of histiocytes. Under normal circumstances, Langerhans cells, a type of white blood cell, act to help the body fight off infections. Note the characteristic red petechial hemorrhagic rash that covered the skin in the region of the lower back, and superior buttocks. See PHIL 23652, for another view of this child’s condition.
