Captured in the operating room, this image depicted an anterior view of the lower left extremity of a 4 ½-year-old child in Georgia, who had sustained a snake bite from what was believed to be a pygmy rattlesnake, Sistrurus miliarius, though the subspecies was not known. Here, the patient’s leg, which would soon be amputated below the knee one day later, showed signs of severe tissue necrosis due to the cytotoxic nature of the snake’s venom. The patient’s leg had also been contained in ice, for 6-days, resulting in iatrogenic frost bite. See PHIL 23643 through 23650, for additional views of this patient’s left lower extremity, revealing how far the effects of necrolytic venom had spread throughout the leg, as well as the effects of the accompanying frost bite on the limb. See PHIL 8138, 8139, 8140, for images depicting three pygmy rattlesnake subspecies.
