This image depicted a close view of the scalp of a 2 ½-year-old male, who had been diagnosed with a case of Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), also referred to as Letterer–Siwe disease, and histiocytosis X. The condition involves the overabundance of immature Langerhans cells, a form of histiocytes. Under normal circumstances, Langerhans cells, a type of white blood cell, act to help the body fight off infections. Here, you see a scalp lesion, characteristic of histiocytosis.
