This image depicted a palmar view of the right hand of a 3-day-old infant, which had been born with a chromosomal aberration known as No. 17-18 (E) trisomy syndrome. The tiny hand had been pried open from its classic clenched form, revealing the presence of but a single horizontal palmar crease. See PHIL 23636, to see how the overlapping of the index finger and fifth finger, over the third and fourth fingers, respectively when the hand is clenched shut. Also, hypoplasia of the fingernails was also apparent. At the time of this deceased child’s autopsy, cardiac-related findings included a ventricular septal defect (VSD), a patent foramen ovale, and a patent ductus arteriosus, and a dextroposition of the aorta. See PHIL 23634, for addition external findings from an anterior perspective, including a shortened upper lip, widely space nipples, and posteriorly rotated left outer ear.
