This image depicted the perennial herbaceous plant, Atropa belladonna more commonly known as belladonna, or deadly nightshade, growing in its natural habitat. An extremely toxic plant, the tissues of A. belladonna, especially its leaves and berries, contain a number of what are classified as tropane alkaloids, including atropine and scopolamine, which are able to produce delirium and hallucinations in those that ingest these chemicals. These chemicals have become widely used throughout the pharmaceutical industry as therapeutic anticholinergics.
