This image depicted a forest environment highlighting the growth of a water hemlock plant, Cicuta maculata. A member of the carrot family, C. maculata is a highly toxic perennial herb, its tissues containing cicutoxin, a chemical known as a gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor antagonist, which is potent enough to induce convulsions and seizures, and even death, due to respiratory failure. As you can see, this plant produces inflorescences of white flowers, and its shiny leaves are composed of several serrated, pointed leaflets.
