This image depicted a forest environment highlighting a poison hemlock plant, Conium maculatum. As reflected in its name, C. maculatum is toxic to humans and animals, its tissues containing alkaloids that acts on the central nervous system, causing central nervous system depression, respiratory arrest, as well as kidney failure, and potentially death. The neurotoxic piperidine alkaloid coniine, is one of the toxins that can cause death through its ability to induce respiratory paralysis.
