This photograph depicts a gross pathology specimen consisting of a section of the heart, which included the root of the aorta, and a portion of the proximal, ascending aorta. You are looking at what was an aortic aneurysm that had ruptured. There was a laminated clot between the tunicae media and tunica adventitia.
