This illustration combines a sagittal, and staggered transaxial section of a Treponema pallidum bacterium, and reveals the cellular organelles located at one end of a T. pallidum spirochete, the etiological agent responsible for the sexually transmitted disease, syphilis. Structures labeled included a nose piece, deep filaments, ribosomes, 3-latered cell membrane, laminated mesosome, Intestinal mesosome, 3-layered cell wall, polygonal surface of outer envelope, mucoid layer, granular mesosome, polygonal sheath, attachment plaque, inner sheath, banded layer, and axial filament core consisting of protein beads of a beaded layer.
