This image depicts a cut section of lung tissue harvested from an owl monkey, Aotus trivirgatus boliviensis, showing signs of pulmonary pneumocystosis, caused by the fungus Pneumocystis jirovecii, formerly known as Pneumocystis carinii. Pneumocystosis is a lung infection often found afflicting humans, who are immunocompromised, due to acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), or the use of chemotherapy.
