This was a close-up of a diphtheria skin lesion, which had been caused by the organism, Corynebacterium diphtheriae. Diphtheria is an acute bacterial disease of the tonsils, pharynx, larynx, nose, and occasionally other mucous membranes, skin, conjunctivae and genitalia. The diagnosis of diphtheria is made through the laboratory recovery of toxigenic, Gram-positive, C. diphtheriae bacteria.
