Caption:
The two test tube slant cultures depicted here, each contained a growth medium that had been inoculated with the dermatophytic fungal organism, Trichophyton mentagrophytes. The tube on the left contained the growth medium, Sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA), while the tube at right contained SDA, to which thiamine had been added. Each tube was incubated for a 4-week time period, and each gave rise to a fungal colony. Note that the colony at right, having been cultivated on SDA with thiamine, was twice as large as the colony at left, which was cultivated solely on SDA.
