Caption:
Under a magnification of 1750X, this photomicrograph revealed some of the ultrastructural morphology exhibited by this dermatophytic fungal organism, which was a species of Arthroderma, labeled strain ARK-17. This image was focused on the region of the cleistothecium known as the peridium, which is the outer wall of the reproductive organ. The hyphae, of which the peridium is composed, are referred to as ossiform, i.e., looking like a bone, reflecting their shape as a chain of dumbbells, which were strung together.
