Description: Caption:
Photographed in 1964, on the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico, this image depicted a close view of one of the stock ponds, inside a snail hatchery. You can see a number of Marisa spp. snails, being raised under these controlled conditions, which would later be released into the wild, in order to prey on the populations of Australorbis spp., also known as Biomphalaria spp. snails, which are hosts to the parasitic worm, Schistosoma mansoni, the cause of human schistosomiasis.
