This 1963 image, depicted the frontal façade of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) field station, located in Phoenix, Arizona. In this view, the staff members had gathered together for a staged group portrait, in front of their workplace. See PHIL 21639, for another exterior view, captured in 1976, which revealed some of the structural upgrades added, including the landscaping. Originally, the Phoenix field station specialized in the study of diarrhea and dysentery, concentrating on vector-borne diseases transmitted by flies, which included polio. The field station eventually became heavily involved in the study of hepatitis, as well.
