This 1957 image, depicted a view of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) field station, located in Phoenix, Arizona. Facing northward, at the intersection of East Adams Street and North 7th Street, you are looking at what was the facility’s main entrance. Originally, the Phoenix field station specialized in the study of diarrhea and dysentery, concentrating on vector-borne diseases transmitted by flies, which included polio. The field station eventually became heavily involved in the study of hepatitis, as well.
