This photomicrograph depicted a tissue sample, which had been prepared using the Steiner silver stain method. The image revealed the presence of numerous, corkscrew-shaped, darkly-stained, Treponema pallidum spirochetes. T. pallidum is the bacterium responsible for causing syphilis.
