Caption:
Under a magnification of 500X, this photomicrograph revealed some of the ultrastructural histopathology exhibited by a Guinea pig hair shaft, which had been infected by the dermatophytic fungal organism, Trichophyton mentagrophytes. In this case, the fungus had invaded the internal structure of the hair shaft, making this infection an endothrix, rather than an exothrix, which would have been confined to the hair’s exterior surface.
